Trenchless Sewer Line Repair in Chattanooga, TN

Repairing your sewer is kind of a big deal. In Chattanooga’s dense neighborhoods, (especially North Chattanooga, Ridgedale, Highland Park, and the Southside), it’s also somewhat inconvenient, especially if the sewer line runs under driveways, gardens, yards, and hardscaping. But there is a way to repair sewer lines without all of the noise: trenchless sewer line repair.

Pioneer Heating, Cooling, Plumbing, & Electrical has been helping Chattanoogans for years, and have been helping Tennesseans since way back in 1981. We’ve repaired countless sewer lines over the years here in the valley, and trenchless is a great option. But ultimately, we;re method-agnostic; if traditional repair’s the right call, we’ll do that too. Either way, we want your plumbing to work, and work well.

What Is Trenchless Sewer Line Repair and How Does It Work?

Trenchless sewer line repair in Chattanooga focuses on two methods: pipe lining and pipe bursting (which we’ll talk more about later). Here’s what to know at a glance.

What ‘Trenchless’ Means

Trenchless means exactly that: no trench needed. With your standard sewer line repair, you need to dig a trench in the yard (or wherever the line is). With trenchless methods, licensed plumbers can access the pipe via access points at both ends, leaving everything aboveground totally unscathed.

Pipe lining (CIPP, Cured-In-Place Pipe)

With trenchless, we use pipe lining, AKA CIPP, which is a flexible liner coated with resin. We insert it right into the pipe and it inflates inside the pipe. When the resin cures (hardens), it forms a brand new, smooth pipe right inside. It’s much simpler than traditional methods, and it adds structural integrity and seals cracks that tree roots love to snake around and fine.

Pipe bursting

This is when we insert a hydraulic head into the pipe, fracturing and pushing the pipe outward into the soil while pulling in the PVC pipe right into its place. THat old pipe is destroyed. What remains is a much more durable and long-lasting option.

Pipe Lining vs. Pipe Bursting

So which method’s the best? Which is right for your home? It depends. Here’s how they stack up, and what makes your home a good candidate for either.

Pipe Lining

Pipe lining is the right choice for you when your pipe’s structure is still relatively fine; cracked, corroded, affected by roots. But not totally wrecked. It’s also the right choice when the pipe still has its basic shape and the homeowner doesn’t want their yard dug up.

Pipe Bursting

This is the right option when your sewer pipe’s in much worse shape. Maybe the pipe wall’s caved in, there are multiple points in the pipe where it full-on collapsed, or the pipe won’t hold the CIPP liner.

When Both Aren’t the Right Choice

Sometimes, both won’t cut it. If your pipe’s entirely collapsed, with soil all in the pipe, there’s a severe pipe belly (a section where the pipe has sagged below its intended slope and pooled waste), or it’s not safe for bursting equipment, trenchless isn’t the right call. Pioneer’s honest about these limitations, and we’ll let you know if opting for traditional pipe repair’s the better option.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does trenchless repair still require permits in Chattanooga?

Yes, you’ll need a permit for trenchless. Even though CIPP doesn’t tear up a yard, it does alter your entire plumbing infrastructure. Since it does this, it’s essentially the same as traditional excavation. You’ll need a permit from Hamilton County and according to Tennessee State Law (the Underground Utility Damage Prevention Act), you’ll need to notify Tennessee 811 three days before doing any digging. This is so everything’s properly (and clearly) marked when it’s finally time to dig.

How do I know if my Chattanooga sewer line qualifies for trenchless repair?

A camera inspection’s really the only way to definitively tell. The Pioneer team will do a comprehensive camera inspection of your sewer pipe to get a clear picture. We’ll check what condition your pipe’s in, the pipe’s structure, the slope, and any access points we need to be aware of.

How long does trenchless sewer line repair last in Chattanooga?

CIPP has a lifespan of around 50+ years when you install it properly. Even if it lasts only 40 years, it’ll outlast the decaying cast iron and cracking clay pipes all over Chattanooga. We can talk to you more about its longevity before we begin the work.
