Top New Year’s Resolutions for your HVAC System

hvac maintenance plan from Pioneer Heating & Air

Many of us make New Year’s resolutions with the goal of improving our lives in some small or big way.  This year, why not come up with one or two 2020 New Year’s resolutions for your heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system? Below are a few easy, achievable goals that will make you feel better about your important investment.

Change Your Air Filter

One of the easiest ways to keep your HVAC system running efficiently is to change the air filter regularly. Air filters help remove particles from the air, resulting in improved indoor air quality (IAQ). Clean filters also contribute to the longevity of an HVAC system by allowing it to run more efficiently. So, how often should you replace an air filter? The answer is not set in stone. This depends in part on whether you have pets, how dusty your home or neighborhood is, and of course how often you run your system. Generally, the filter should be replaced about every three months, more frequently during high-use periods. Check with your HVAC professional about which filter you should use and how often you should replace it.

Check for Drafts and Leaks

Nearly every household has air leaks, letting in warm, humid air in the summer or cold air in the winter. Consider checking all windows and doors for drafts, and use weather strips, caulk, or clear plastic weatherizers to seal up leaks. Utility pipes and recessed lighting are also common leaky culprits. Seal them up with caulking or insulation. Fireplaces can also have air leaks. Be sure that the damper is fully closed, and consider installing tempered glass doors with a good seal. With just a few simple steps you’ll be surprised by the energy savings you’ll achieve by reducing your system’s run time.

Schedule Your Regular HVAC Maintenance

Routine maintenance of your HVAC system will assure that it is running efficiently. It can also prevent potentially costly repairs over the life of the unit. Some HVAC maintenance plans will also give you priority service if you should need repairs.
