Luckily, there are a few simple solutions to help you combat a dust problem caused by a malfunctioning HVAC unit.
Plug up any air leaks you might have
Approximately 25% of your home’s heat is lost through small holes and cracks. The same is true for your home’s cooling during the summer months. But in this case, a dusty home may be caused by leaky ductwork.
Leaky ductwork is surprisingly common. Small gaps can appear in your ductwork due to age. This allows dust to flow into your system right through the filter.
Check your home for dust buildup around your vents or your HVAC system’s fins. If there’s dust buildup in these areas, you may be experiencing leaky ductwork. Consider contacting a professional HVAC contractor if you suspect there are leaks in your ducts.
Filter out the dust
Another common source of dust in your home is your HVAC system’s filters. You need to check your HVAC filters at least once a month to keep your home’s air quality in good shape. When they’re dirty, clean or replace them as necessary.
When your HVAC filters are clogged, it keeps the system from filtering the dust out of your indoor air for you. So more of that dust ends up on the top layer of your bookshelves and TV.
Yet the problem may not necessarily be your HVAC filters themselves. Be sure that when you change your HVAC filters that you’re making sure the filter is tightly sealed in the air return. When there are gaps between the air return and your filter, dust is able to bypass your filter entirely and flow back into your home.
