How to Save Money with these Winter Heating Tips

Winter Heating Tips

When November hits, so do sizable heating bills, and unfortunately for many of us, they continue to climb through spring. The good news is there are a number of things you can do to save money in winter on heating. Check out the tips below that will allow you to remain comfortable through the winter while keeping a check on costs.

Turn down the heat

Adjusting your thermostat to 68 degrees (62 while sleeping or not at home) will reduce your energy usage enormously. Simply throw on a sweater or extra blanket and enjoy the savings. Invest in a programmable thermostat, which will allow you to create settings in advance. Alternatively, smart thermostats allow you to monitor and change temperatures remotely via a smartphone.

HVAC maintenance

Get a tune-up before winter hits to keep your heating system running efficiently. Check with your HVAC professional for maintenance tips.

Replace furnace filters regularly

Be sure to regularly replace your filter as dirty filters reduce airflow and cause your furnace to work less efficiently. Check with your HVAC professional about how often you need to change your particular filter.

Seal drafts and leaks in the home

Check all doors and windows for air leaks, and use weather strips or caulking to seal them up. Seal air leaks around utility pipes, recessed lights. If you own a fireplace, make sure your damper is closed when you’re not burning. Also, install tempered glass doors that create a tight seal.

Get the most out of your windows

Take advantage of warmth from natural sunlight by opening window coverings during bright, sunny days. Consider weatherizing as needed with clear plastic sheets. Keep window coverings closed in rooms that don’t get direct sunlight. Some window treatments are insulated and therefore further improve energy efficiency.
