Regular replacement of the filter for your heating, venting and air conditioning unit helps your system operate at peak levels and improves indoor air quality. A number of factors can negatively affect both your system’s performance and your home’s air quality, so it’s important to change filters regularly to ensure proper air flow and to keep your home free from dust, allergens and germs.

Smoking, cooking (especially frying), keeping indoor pets, frequent use of cleaners and air fresheners, interior painting or refurbishing – all of these and more inject into the air particulates, aerosols, dander, hair and other materials that your air filter must trap. Moisture in crawl spaces or unventilated bathrooms that may produce mold and heavy carpeting that retains particulates, dust and even dust mites likewise can introduce pollutants into the air, which your filter has to screen.

Outdoor air quality also affects interior air quality. When you open your windows in the spring and fall, emissions from surrounding industrial activity, nearby vehicular traffic, and lawn care equipment like lawnmowers and leaf blowers enter your home. It doesn’t help, either, to be living in a region generally regarded as one of the worst areas in the nation for pollen production and one that also has high ozone concentrations.

With all of these ingredients mixing a soup in the atmosphere, there is no question that regular replacement or cleaning of your air filter will improve your home’s air quality and your system’s operation. And remember, keeping your HVAC system working at optimum efficiency also reduces your utility bills.

Pioneer Heating & Air can help you plan out a schedule for changing or cleaning your filter. In general, we recommend that you replace your disposable filters at least once a month. If you have washable filters, they should be cleaned once a month. However, depending on the type of filter you have, it may need to be replaced or cleaned more often than once a month. Your Pioneer Heating & Air service technician will recommend the ideal filters and replacement schedules for your unit(s).

This replacement schedule will deliver maximum efficiency and filtration for your specific system. With a Pioneer Heating & Air Preferred Maintenance Plan, we clean and inspect your HVAC system twice each year. Part of the service includes changing the filters or servicing your filtering system. But in addition to this twice yearly maintenance plan, we suggest that you visually check filters and filtering equipment monthly. If filters look dirty, they need to be cleaned or replaced.

You can even sign up for monthly email reminders to change your filter at Pioneercomfort.com.
