Helpful Housing Tips For Fighting Back Against Winter Allergies

The fall and winter months might be some of the best times to get together with friends and family. But for those with allergies, it’s often the worst time of the year. When your nose isn’t stuffed up from dander, pollen, or your aunt’s shedding cats, it’s most likely stuffed up from the common cold.

Fortunately, you don’t have to suffer during what’s supposed to be the best time of the year. Here are few helpful tips to keep your winter allergies at bay during the colder months and through the holiday season.

Regularly change your HVAC filters

During the winter months, the filters of your home heating system can really take a beating. This is especially true if you have pets. Fur, dander, and dust can build up in the fans and cause the air quality to diminish. And, because your windows are closed more during this time of the year, it can keep clean fresh air from filtering in.

Consider changing the filters of your home heating system at least once a month if you have pets. If you don’t have pets, it may still do you some good to swap out your filters more frequently than usual this time of year. Additionally, don’t choose a filter simply because it’s the cheapest one available. These filters won’t filter out the air particles you need them to filter.

Another reason to change your filters more frequently this winter is the risk for house fires. Up to 28% of American fires caused by a home heating system is because the homeowners failed to clean their heating equipment. Therefore, for the sake of your sinuses and your safety, be sure to regularly use HVAC maintenance.

Inspect your flooring

If your HVAC services have determined your furnace or other heating system is well-functioning and you’ve been changing your filters regularly, there may be another culprit for your allergies: the carpet. With proper cleaning, your carpet should last your home up to 10 years.

The older the carpet is, the more bacteria and allergens are lurking in its fibers. Your heating system may be picking up these allergens and distributing them through the air. If this is the case, vacuum your carpet often to keep these allergens from entering your HVAC system during the winter.
