Signs That Your Furnace Is On the Fritz

We as human beings live indoors to shelter ourselves from the weather conditions that exist out in Mother Nature. We have insulated walls, thick glass windows, and HVAC systems to keep the weather outside and control the temperature inside.

Because we cannot typically withstand the ever changing climate outside, we keep our homes regulated as much as possible. Our HVAC systems allow us to control the temperature inside our homes. Therefore, it is important to make sure that they are always working efficiently. In order to do this, regular HVAC system maintenance should be completed two times a year. It should be done in the spring before the hot summer rolls around, and it should be done in the fall before winter freezes over.

Even with regular maintenance, your furnace or AC unit can go downhill. Here are some warning signs that you might need some furnace repair.

AgeEven with regular maintenance, your furnace will start to show its age after around 15 years of use. If you notice that it’s not working the way that it should and it’s close to its 15-year shelf life, it might be time to get a replacement.

CostIf you have a pretty consistent heating bill, and it suddenly increases, it may be because your furnace is dying. Now if it happens when the weather changes to a colder temperature and you’re running your furnace more often, that is normal. However, if your heating bill is significantly more than last winter, for example, it might be time for some furnace repair.

NoiseIf you ever notice that your furnace is making unusual noises, this is a pretty clear sign that something is wrong. Any kind of rattling, popping, or banging sounds mean that it’s probably time for a new furnace.

TemperatureDo you find yourself constantly adjusting the thermostat to get comfortable? If you are always too hot or too cold, regardless of the thermostat settings, your furnace needs some professional attention.

If any of these signs sound familiar, it’s time for some furnace repair. Remember, regular maintenance to your HVAC system is key, but you still may need to replace your furnace down the road if these things are present.
